Doctor Cait Blake sat behind her desk going over the latest stack of PADDs
that had spawned there during her lunch break. She should have known better
that to go for her meal but it had been pleasant to spend that time with her
one year old daughter. There was a list of new crewman still needing their
incoming physical and she figured she'd get some of those cleared out today.
Ensign Marie Lyndosee took a deep breathe and walked to the sickbay, having
transfered on a short time ago as her first assignment she was a bit
apprehensive and worried meeting new people. She carefully moves to the door
and knocks quietly, not hitting the call button and just waiting. Her eyes
lowered as she waited for her appointment.
Looking up the knock, Cait gave Marie a warm smile. She was a tiny woman
with blue eyes and firey red hair. Pointed ears could be seen as she tucked
a stray hair behind one. the smell of rich coffee permeated the room. "Can I
help you, Ensign?"
The small alpha centaurian slowly entered, her blonde hair in two large
braids tied behind her head as she smoothed down the red security shirt and
looked to the doctor and whispered. "I have been ordered to come for a
physical. I am perfectly healthy I ashure you and no medical issues that
will be a detrement to myself or the ship. Can I go now?"
Cait chuckled. "I know you're healthy but we do another physical to get a
baseline. Also, a hands on examine is done so if we're ever in a situation
where we don't have any tech available, we have an idea of what is normal
for you. I'm Doctor Caitlin Blake, CMO on the Vimy....and you are?"
Snapping to a salute with her back strait, her small chest puffed out trying
to seem as intimidating as a four foot ten inch girl can. "Security Officer,
Ensign Marie Lyndosee, reporting for initial physical as ordered Sir! Ma'am!
umm Sir!" Trying to gather herself, "I am new to the ship I have just
graduated the academy and was assigned here."
"At ease, Ensign. We're a pretty relaxed bunch down here." Cait rose and
stepped out from behind her desk. "And I have to say, its nice to find
someone shorter than me." She grinned at the young woman. "Come on with me
and we'll get this over with in a jiffy."
She gulped and looked up to the woman and with a whimper of worry followed
close behind. Her eyes lowered as she tried to relax at ease but did her
best to seem at ease as she moves to the medical area and stood still. "What
do I do Doctor?", she asked quietly.
Cait pushed a footstool over to one of the beds, seeming to radiate a sense
of calm and ease. "Just hop up on the bed. You don't even need to lie down."
Nodding she reached up and rather ungracefuly crawled into the bed and sat.
Her feet dangling down as she pouted hoping no one would see her size as she
got much grief in security training for it. "Now what Ma'am?"
"I start your scans and I do the hands on part I told you about." Cait got
the scans started, then gave Marie an old fashion physical exam, right down
to using an otoscope to look in her ears, a sphygmomanometer to check her
blood pressure and a little rubber hammer to check her reflexes. Through
each step, Cait explained what she was doing and continued to radiate that
same calm and ease. "You get teased a lot about your size?"
Her reflexes tested perfect as her knee jumped, she shivered at the cold
instruments and followed orders without a question as she looked around her
calmness forming as she obediently followed orders. Whispering an answer,
"Security is expected to be big and gorn like, not small fragile and
intelligent...
the other recruits were... quiet cruel."
Cait nodded in understanding. "Its not so bad for doctors but I've taken
some teasing myself. I had to have a foot stool to be able to do surgery. I
keep bunches scattered around sickbay and two in the OR that's set up for
me. Just remember, you had the last laugh on them. You graduated and
Starfleet wouldn't do that if you couldn't do your job."
Nodding she looks around probably needing to find a footstool supplier too
as she whispers, "I graduated with honors, well Ma'am what else is needed
because I think I have to report for duty soon?"
"I think we're done for now." Cait slid a footstool over so Marie could get
down more easily. "Marie, my door is always open if you want to talk. I make
a mean pot of coffee and hey, we short people have to stick together." She
was concerned with the girl's seeming lack of self confidence.
With a reashured smile she slipped down onto the stool and smoothed out
her yellow uniform top as she nodded with a whisper, "I do enjoy coffee and
I
shall take you up on it..." Snapping a salute she smiled and turned to hurry
off
to her assigned duty.
Cait watched as Marie left, thinking she would have to give Ivri a heads up.
