She still lacks confidence, particularly in larger groups, but is now more than capable of holding a conversation. During childhood, she shied heavily away from human contact, and needed the interaction of the Academy, along with help from fiancée Mark Cross to bring her out of her shell. She finds it difficult to open up to anyone she doesn’t feel comfortable with. Sarah tends to try and avoid situations she is unfamiliar with, feeling much more confident in sickbay rather than taking a position on away missions. For that reason, she is also qualified at Navigations. Sarah has made a few poor life decisions, and has struggled to be able to face up to them. Her inability to open up to counselors and friends has caused her to bottle up her troubles inside her. Her engagement to Cross was ended after her affair was discovered. Lieutenant Aaron Thomas went against his promise, breaking up with her several months later. Sarah drifted into a self-destructive pattern, which was quickly noticed by her crewmates. She was removed from active duty and sent to Counseling. After a long, drawn out process of trust development, she was able to release some of the bottled up emotion, and was passed fit to return to active duty on the USS Hiei.
